Published: 02/11/2018

Find out how to throw a bonfire party that everyone will remember. On Sunday 5th November people across the UK will celebrate the anniversary of Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. It's the perfect time for small firework displays in back gardens or going to see a large public bonfire. If you're planning on throwing a party then we have some inspiring ideas on how you can make this a night to remember.

If there's going to be a lot of young children at the party then it could be a good idea to have a few fun games in mind. Some simple ways to keep children entertained is to keep a section of your party just for the kids, with colouring in, toys and lots of sweets! As most adults are also a fan of games, apple bobbing can be a fantastic addition. Bonfire Night is a great time to practice your cocktail making skills, and making a game of it! Who can make the best cocktail? Always drink responsibly, especially when near fireworks! What games do you play on bonfire night?

Fireworks and safety

Every bonfire party should have a fantastic firework display. What fireworks you use depends on how much space you have, and if you have children or pets. Small children and nervous dogs and cats will not appreciate very loud bangs. Sparklers are an ideal (and quiet!) addition to any bonfire party. Fountains and wheels make great displays without bangs - fountains crackle and some wheels whistle. Cakes and candles make thudding sounds without a shocking bang. Check out this handy guide on quiet fireworks. Also, read our tips on how to keep pets calm on Bonfire Night. If you're going to have a bonfire, remember to check the firewood to make sure no hedgehogs have made it their home! It's very important that there is a clear line on where people and children should not cross over unless you are going to set the firework off. When it comes to setting the fireworks off there should be only one person to do this. The designated person should ensure they have read the instructions and refrain from alcohol. Please go to the Fire Service for further information on safety when holding your own firework displays.
