Shed Felt

Shed Felt

Without the right roof, garden sheds are left vulnerable to the elements, so it’s crucial that purpose-made materials like shed felt are used. Take a look at our collection of shed roofing felt, suitable for roofing log cabins and summer houses too.

Shed roof felt is a long-lasting, weather-proof material made from compressed cloth, which is used to roof outdoor structures like tool sheds, Wendy houses and other similar non-residential buildings. Once compressed, the cloth is soaked in a petroleum-based substance called bitumen — this is what makes it so durable and watertight, while still being flexible.

How to Install a Felt Shed Roof

Felting a shed roof is a fairly straightforward process, providing you’ve got the right tools and materials. You’ll need a roll of high-grade roof felt for sheds, a tape measure, a Stanley knife to cut it down to size, some galvanised clout nails and a claw hammer to secure them with.

First, you’ll want to roll the felt out to let it flatten, then when you go to measure it, allow for 35mm of overhang at each end of the roof, before securing it with the clout nails at regular intervals. For a more detailed installation guide, take a look at our article on how to felt a shed roof

How to Repair a Shed Roof

If you’ve got exposed timber, or your shed has started to let in water, it’s likely your roof needs repairing. We recommend removing the finials and fascia before stripping off the old or damaged felt, and being extra careful removing the old nails. You can then either completely or partially replace the shed felt, depending on the scale of the problem — check out our blog on repairing shed rooves for a step by step guide.
