How to Build a Garden Workshop

What is a Garden Workshop?

A garden workshop is a dedicated space for those who enjoy gardening, have a hobby and a functional space for woodwork and other forms of crafts.   It can also be an ideal space for extra storage and a home business!

Depending on your specific needs, there are several factors to consider.

  1. Firstly, access is crucial. Do you require large, double doors that can accommodate moving sizable pieces? This will make your life much easier.
  2. Next, lighting is essential. Will you be working on intricate details and need good lighting, both natural and electric, to ensure your safety while using machinery? If you use the machinery regularly, you might need extra lighting for year-round use.
  3. Ventilation is key for a comfortable and healthy workspace. Will you need to open windows to clear the air from fumes or sawdust? This will help maintain a fresh environment.
  4. Roof height is worth considering as well. If you require extra storage or need ample space to work comfortably, make sure the workshop has sufficient height.
  5. Lastly, security is a must-have. Ensure your workshop is well-protected to safeguard your tools and equipment.

By taking these factors into account, you can create a fantastic home workshop tailored to your specific needs.

There are plenty of workshop designs and sizes available, so picking the perfect workshop can be tough. But don't worry, our guide is here to assist you in your search!

Do you need Planning Permission for a Garden Workshop?

Having a workshop in your garden is a great way to add more storage and workspace. Garden workshops are considered outbuildings for non-residential use, so you usually don't need planning permission if you meet certain criteria. Tiger workshops are usually okay in terms of planning, but it's a good idea to double-check these rules...

For instance, the building you choose shouldn't take up more than half of the land around your property. Make sure the shed eaves are no higher than 2.5 meters, with pitched roofs maxing out at 4 meters and flat roofs at 3 meters. If your shed is within 2 meters of a boundary, the total height including the roof can't exceed 2.5 meters. If it's further than 2 meters away, just keep the eaves under 2.5 meters. Remember, this is just a summary, so it's best to consult your local Council before starting any shed projects. You can also refer to our Shed Planning Permission Guide for more information.

What are the Benefits of a Garden Workshop?

A garden workshop offers a range of benefits, from practical storage solutions to creating a conducive environment for learning and creativity. It can be a valuable addition for those passionate about gardening, whether it's a hobby or a professional pursuit.

Workshop Storage

It's important to have enough storage space to keep all your tools, gardening gear and other supplies organised. You can include cabinets, shelves, and storage bins in your design to make sure everything has its place.  A workshop can also provide a convenient space to store seasonal items like garden furniture or decorations when they're not being used, keeping them safe from the weather.

When it comes to organising your workshop, shelving is the place to start. Look for heavy-duty shelves as they will need to be able to withstand a hefty weight if you plan to store a lot on them.

Most of your bulky items can be hung on the walls, such as bikes which can be hung vertically.

Barn-style sheds, also referred to as gambrel, mansard, or Dutch roofed sheds, feature a classic barn roof design. With this style, you get plenty of headroom and generous storage space, along with a unique and charming look.

Work from Home

When you're considering starting or moving your business to a garden workshop, it's important to carefully think about every detail, from furniture and equipment to heating and electricity! We have some simple tips to help you confidently plan your workshop.

1. Location: When it comes to setting up your workshop, the location is key. Take a stroll around your garden and consider how to make the most of the space available for your outdoor building.

2. Weatherproofing: The weather should be your first consideration. If your workshop is completely exposed to the elements without any protection, it will feel colder, so choose a spot that provides some shelter by placing it near trees or other buildings. Whether your workshop is small or large, you'll be grateful for having it shielded in the long term.

3. Sunlight and Shade: Think about the sunlight and its direction. It's generally not a good idea to position your workshop directly in the sun's path. While the thought of a warm and well-lit shed might seem nice for relaxation, too much sun can make the interior uncomfortably hot for work. Keeping your office in too much shade can leave it chilly and dim, especially during winter months. Strive for a balance that offers the right amount of sun exposure for your requirements.

4. Accessibility: When choosing your workshop location, make sure it's easily accessible from your home. Having it nearby will make it convenient to switch between work and personal life. Also, consider amenities like power outlets and Wi-Fi for added convenience.

5. Noise Levels: Consider the noise levels around your chosen work area. If it's too loud due to traffic or noisy neighbour’s, it may not be the best place to focus. Look for a quieter spot in your garden where you can work without disturbances.

6. Inspiration and Surroundings: Lastly, think about how the surroundings can inspire you. A beautiful view or a peaceful garden can boost your creativity and productivity. Opt for a location that offers a pleasant and motivating atmosphere for your work.

Running a business and operating from the comfort of your own home workshop brings numerous perks, giving you a dedicated and efficient area for both you and your business to flourish.

If you decide to transform your workshop into a home office for remote work or personal projects, you'll discover ample room to arrange a desk, chair and all the essential office equipment. Ultimately, a workshop offers a versatile and roomy setting to create a cosy and efficient workspace.

Hobby Workshop

A garden workshop can be a versatile space that offers an ideal environment for pursuing various hobbies. Depending on its design, features and overall size, it can accommodate a range of activities.

The key is to tailor the workshop to suit the specific needs and preferences of your hobby, incorporating design elements, storage solutions, and lighting that enhance the enjoyment and functionality of the space.

Here are some ways a garden room can be used for hobbies:

Art Studio:

    • Set up an art studio with easels, tables, and storage for art supplies.
    • Utilise natural light for painting, drawing, or other artistic pursuits.
    • Create a comfortable and inspiring space for artistic expression.

Garden Workshop Considerations

When you start looking for the ideal garden workshop, there are many things to think about. Tiger are experts in this field and will help you consider important factors like size, materials and functionality. We offer a variety of options and features to make sure your workshop not only meets but surpass your expectations. Our workshop sheds are built to be strong and can be customised to suit your needs. With our guidance, your back garden can become a thriving hub of creativity and productivity.

Size

Wooden workshops are built slightly bigger than typical garden sheds, offering extra height and width for easier access and increased storage capacity. With a variety of sizes available, you can find the perfect workshop to suit your needs.  Large, full height double doors are always a great idea for a workshop to make sure you have plenty of ventilation and can move your equipment in and out with ease.

Keep in mind, it's a good idea to err on the side of caution and choose a shed that is larger than you think you'll need. This is especially important if you plan on using the workshop for both storage and as a workshop. One of the biggest mistakes people make when selecting a shed is underestimating the necessary size. Don’t forget you’ll need enough space to move around comfortably in your workshop, as well as the area you'll want to set aside for a workbench or storage.

Material

Timber is still the top choice when it comes to shed materials, and it offers more than just a classic appearance. There are many reasons why timber is the best material for building garden sheds. One of the main advantages is its beautiful aesthetic. A wooden shed can effortlessly blend into any garden and provide a durable and functional storage and working space.

When you step inside a wooden workshop shed, you'll be greeted by the delightful scent of timber. The atmosphere inside is usually comfortable, thanks to wood's natural ability to regulate temperature.

Whether you have a tight budget or are looking for a low-maintenance option, there's a timber shed for everyone. Dip-treated timber sheds are a more affordable choice, while pressure-treated sheds require less maintenance.

Quality

Buying a well-made workshop shed offers numerous benefits, proving to be a smart and advantageous investment. Here are a few reasons why opting for a high-quality shed is a wise move:

Durability and Longevity:

  • Quality sheds are built with durable materials and solid construction, ensuring longevity and resistance to weather elements.

Protection for Stored Items:

  • A high-quality workshop provides better protection for your stored items from weather conditions, pests, and theft.

Low Maintenance:

  • Quality sheds often require less maintenance compared to cheaper alternatives.

Enhanced Security:

  • Quality sheds come with robust doors and locking mechanisms, providing better security for your belongings.
  • Beware of cheaper sheds with styrene plastic windows (which tend to mist over time). All Tiger glazed workshops come with 3mm thick toughened glazing as standard.  The glass is more shock and heat resistant than normal shed windows, making your workshop even more durable.
  • Sealing shed windows is a crucial step to enhance the overall functionality and durability of your workshop. Properly sealed windows offer protection against water infiltration, preventing potential damage to the shed's interior and its contents. By eliminating drafts and leaks, sealing ensures a more controlled environment inside the shed, promoting insulation and temperature regulation. This not only safeguards items stored within from moisture-related issues but also contributes to energy efficiency. Ultimately, a well-sealed shed with properly sealed windows provides a more secure, comfortable, and long-lasting solution for your storage and workspace needs.

Aesthetics:

  • High-quality sheds often have a more appealing and well-finished appearance.
  • Aesthetically pleasing sheds can enhance the overall look of your property.

Customisation and Features:

  • Quality sheds may offer more customisation options and additional features.
  • You can choose specific sizes and features to meet your unique storage or workspace requirements.

From just adding an extra window, to something completely original, just let us know. As we mill the timber ourselves, we can be much more flexible than the competition – and much more creative!

Resale Value:

  • Should you ever decide to sell your property, a quality workshop can add to its overall resale value.

Adaptability and Functionality:

  • A workshop is a multifunctional space that can be adapted to various uses and functions, giving you flexibility.

Warranty and Manufacturer Support:

  • All Tiger garden buildings come with a market-leading 20 year guarantee.   Tigers are built to last for decades.

Compliance with Regulations:

  • Garden sheds are considered permitted developments for non-residential use, and specific criteria must be met for planning permission not to be required, but always check with your local authority.

Energy Efficiency:

  • Some high-quality sheds may offer better insulation and energy-efficient features, making them more comfortable for use in all seasons.

In summary, purchasing a quality workshop is an investment in reliability, longevity and functionality. While the upfront cost may be higher, the benefits in terms of durability, security, and overall satisfaction often outweigh the initial expense in the long run.

Why Choose Tiger?

It’s not just the standard of the wood we use that defines a Tiger and marks it out as a high-quality building, but the finishing touches and the extra care we take to ensure you can find your perfect space.

Workshop Cladding:

Choose a wooden workshop featuring 12-15mm shiplap tongue and groove or log lap cladding, along with a sturdy 4-corner 12x48mm framework for long-lasting durability. Cheaper workshops will have a flimsy 'matchstick thin' framework that won't hold up over time.

Timber grading heavily relies on the speed at which it grows. Slower-growing timber boasts higher density thanks to its tightly packed grain, offering superior strength and stability while reducing vulnerability to issues like splits, knotholes and warping.

Workshop Flooring:

Make sure to select a workshop that has thick tongue and groove boards in both the floor and roof sections and avoid any that use cheap sheet materials like OSB or chipboard. Be cautious of workshop sheds with single piece OSB/chipboard roof and floorboards, as they may not provide enough protection where you need it most - despite being widely used, they lack waterproof properties. When exposed to excessive moisture, it swells and gradually deteriorates. Surprisingly, even without direct contact with water, OSB and chipboard can be negatively affected by prolonged high humidity. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid this in areas with high humidity or where the wood may encounter water.

Workshop Base:

You’re going to need to build your workshop on a strong, level base such as concrete, paving slabs or timber bearers.  This will give your workshop the strength it needs to stand strong and last.  It's crucial to have a solid and even foundation when putting together garden buildings. Without the right base, assembling them can be a real challenge. This could result in problems down the line, like doors not fitting properly or water seeping in. Plus, if you assemble a garden building on the wrong base, it might void any warranty it comes with.

Insulation

Insulation not only keeps you warm, but it also offers a range of other advantages:

1. Soundproofing: It not only helps to keep the temperature comfortable but also minimises any unwanted noise. This is particularly crucial if you have noisy equipment, as it will ensure that you maintain a good relationship with your neighbours.

2. Improved Security: Thicker walls in your workshop not only provide better insulation but also enhance security. A strong structure is harder to damage or break into. Moreover, well-sealed doors and windows offer additional protection.

3. Energy Efficiency: If you intend to spend a lot of time in your workshop, insulation is essential. It enhances energy efficiency, leading to lower energy bills. No matter how you use your workshop, effective insulation will help you cut down on energy expenses.

4. Added Value: Insulating your workshop opens numerous possibilities and can even increase your property's value. With proper insulation, you can enjoy your workshop throughout the year, regardless of the outside conditions.

Wi-Fi and Electrical Supply

Having a workshop in your garden has a great advantage - it's conveniently close to your home, so accessing your Wi-Fi is a breeze! This saves you both time and money since you won't have to deal with installation fees or wait for the service to be set up.

If you find that the Wi-Fi signal doesn't quite reach your workshop, don't worry! Just get yourself a Wi-Fi range extender. These nifty devices plug into any power socket and boost the signal, ensuring it reaches you without any issues.

Adding heating to your garden shed is a game-changer, offering year-round functionality and protection for stored items. It creates a comfortable workspace, preventing dampness and mould while ensuring optimal conditions for tools and equipment. Whether you're using the shed as a workshop, office, or hobby space, heating enhances productivity and extends working hours. Additionally, a heated workshop can add value to your property. Consider the type of heating system that suits your needs and climate, and transform your garden shed into a versatile haven.

To bring electricity to your workshop, you'll need to connect your office's consumer unit to the electric mains in your home. This requires the help of a qualified electrician and the installation of an underground armoured cable running from your house to the garden building. When choosing the best spot for your garden workshop, consider a location that allows for a clear path for the cable. This will help reduce installation costs and minimise future complications.

Check with your local building department to ensure compliance with all necessary legal requirements. These regulations are in place to protect against potential hazards like electric shocks and fires. Some common requirements include obtaining permits, adhering to safety standards, and hiring a licensed electrician for the installation. It's also crucial to use outdoor-rated electrical components, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, and weatherproof enclosures as needed. By staying informed about these legal requirements, you can ensure a safe and compliant electrical setup for your workshop.

Security

To increase the security of your workshop, there are a few steps you can follow.

  1. Firstly, ensure that both the doors and windows have strong locks to discourage unauthorised access.
  2. It's also a good idea to install motion-activated lighting around the office perimeter, as this not only acts as a deterrent but also improves visibility at night.
  3. If possible, consider investing in a security system with cameras and alarms that can be connected to your home network for remote monitoring.
  4. Another effective measure is to strategically plant thorny plants near the windows, as they naturally deter intruders.
  5. Additionally, make sure that your workshop is easily visible from your home, as this can discourage potential burglars.
  6. Lastly, store any valuable equipment in secure cabinets or lockers.

By combining these measures, you can create a more secure and protected workshop space.

To assist garden workshop owners in safeguarding their property from intruders, we have compiled some tips on how to enhance shed security. Did you know that approximately 22,500 shed burglaries occur in the UK each year? However, by taking the necessary precautions, you can keep your belongings safe.

There are four key stages to improving the security of your wooden shed and deterring determined criminals:

1. Keep your shed out of reach from thieves.

2. Take measures to prevent break-ins.

3. Safeguard your possessions in case of a breach.

4. Protect yourself if thieves manage to steal your belongings.

Lighting

Lighting is essential for creating a productive and comfortable workspace. Start by maximising natural light with well-placed windows to reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day.

For artificial lighting, consider a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Install overhead fixtures or pendant lights for ambient lighting, ensuring even illumination throughout the space. Task lighting, such as lamps or under-cabinet lights, can provide focused illumination for specific work areas. Additionally, consider accent lighting to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space.

Opt for energy-efficient LED bulbs to reduce electricity consumption and provide a consistent, bright light. Incorporating dimmers allows you to adjust the lighting according to different tasks and moods. Overall, a well-thought-out lighting plan contributes to a functional and workshop environment.

Solar power is a greener and cost-efficient way to provide energy to your garden building. As utility bills continue to rise, there is a growing trend towards self-sufficiency in energy usage. To reduce costs, many people are exploring ways to generate their own energy. One innovative idea is to install your workshop with solar panels. By harnessing the power of the sun, and with the right solar equipment, it is posible to generate the energy needed to run your workshop. This not only reduces your overall expenses but also eliminates the need for shared spaces or costly office rentals.
